零序电流互感器一般都用在高压系统，一个独立的系统，有一个（可能产生的）最大接地电流，当系统中某一线路（或设备）发生接地故障时，让故障线路的电源侧断路器跳开，这个故障信号是从零序电流互感器检测到并送到保护器，让断路器跳闸。选择零序电流互感器的方法主要有二条：1、所接线路发生接地时，接地电流能使保护正确动作（包括发信），不使零序电流互感器发生磁饱和，就是根据系统最大接地电流来选；2、根据所接电缆（线路的方式（三芯电缆还是三根单芯电缆）及电缆的大小（零序电流互感器的孔）来选择（配置）。
